Emily Mitchell, a 36-year-old homeschooling mom of four, was in her second trimester with her fifth child. She was healthy, active, and happily preparing new educational projects for her family and online community. On the morning of December 22, 2020, Emily sat down for breakfast with her family. What started as an ordinary day quickly turned tragic when she suddenly became unresponsive. Despite immediate efforts to help and emergency responders arriving, Emily and her unborn baby could not be saved.

In the days that followed, her loved ones searched for answers. Eventually, the medical examiner confirmed the cause: a pulmonary embolism — a serious condition caused by a blood clot that travels to the lungs, often without warning.Emily’s family shared the news publicly, expressing gratitude for the first responders and the community’s overwhelming support. They also spoke about the hidden risks of pulmonary embolisms, especially during pregnancy, where hormonal and physical changes can increase the likelihood of clotting.

Before her passing, Emily had built a vibrant online community through The Hidden Way Learning, a homeschooling resource project she created. She was deeply committed to her children’s education and to helping other families create meaningful, nature-based learning experiences. After her loss, Emily’s husband Joseph stepped forward to raise their four children — Finn, Isla, Edie, and Lulu — while honoring her legacy.

Close friends joined him in continuing the homeschooling traditions Emily loved, sharing her message of joyful, connected family life.Though her passing was sudden, Emily’s work and spirit continue to inspire thousands of families. Her story serves as both a tribute to her life and a reminder to be aware of silent health conditions like pulmonary embolism.
